The Periotest Methods As A Measure of Jaw Bone Quality

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare and evaluate the bony quality according to the positions for dental implants by testing of natural teeth with Periotest.
The Periotest dynamically measure the reaction of the periodontium to a defined impact load. And the Periotest value(PTV) indicates periodontal damping and correlates closely to clinical mobility of the tooth.
For this study, 1288 teeth of unilateral upper and lower jaws from 92 persons(50 males & 42 females) were examined and tested with Periotest.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1. PTV for the all tested teeth ranged from -6 to+18 with a mean of 1.94¡¾3.19.
2. In the comparison between males and females, mean PTV of males (1.58¡¾3.18) was lower than that of females (2.36¡¾3.15) (p<0.05).
3. In the comparison between maxilla and mandible, mean PTV of mandibular teeth (1.32¡¾3.11) was lower than that of maxillary teeth (2.56¡¾3.15) (p<0.05).
This seems to show that the bone quality of mandible is better than that of maxilla.
4. In the comparison among the tested teeth. Mean PTVs of maxillary teeth were 3.30¡¾2.46 in central incisor, 2.51¡¾2.51 in lateral incisor, -1.30¡¾1.99 in canine, 2.49¡¾2.66 in first premolar, 3.41¡¾2.71 in second premolar, 2.60¡¾2.78 in first
molar
and 4.90¡¾3.11 in second molar respectively. And mean PTVs of mandibular teeth were 4.54¡¾2.15 in central incisor, 2.87¡¾2.13 in lateral incisor, -1.92¡¾1.90 in canine. -0.41¡¾2.10 in first premolar, 0.87¡¾2.14 in second premolar, 0.86¡¾2.51 in
first
molar and 2.43¡¾3.28 in second molar respectively.
The larger root surface area and the more irregular configuration of root, the lower PTV.
